Industrial Applications

Black Oxide coatings are widely used in the machining and general metal forming industries. This due to the very close tolerances typically required. The “hot” black oxide process is the only mil or industry accepted process. It adds dimension only on an atomic level changing the surface from Fe3 to Fe3O4 picking up an atom of oxygen. The penetration is approximately 5 to 10 millionths of an inch providing corrosion protection for critical size parts. The black oxide itself has a hardness of 5.5 on the Mohs’ scale.

Typical parts for black oxide coating are Tool and Die Components; Metal Stampings; Screw Machine Parts; Wire; Fasteners and many other parts.
